The Junior School
Our small classes ensure that the needs of the individual are catered for. This enables teachers to note the difficulties that an individual may be experiencing with any aspect of the curriculum and to plan an appropriate course of action. At the other end of the spectrum, in small classes it is also possible to ensure that the more academically able students are presented with the challenge necessary to develop their true potential, enabling them to progress at a rate designed to suit their ability.
Our curriculum is wide, covering a full range of subjects. French is included in the curriculum for all children from the age of five years, as is Information and Cummunication Technology. Pupils are taught in the Science Laboratory by a science specialist from the age of nine years. Full use of our specialist teachers’ skills is made in the Junior School in all subject areas. This enables us to provide a stimulating and challenging environment throughout the school.
By introducing the children to different teachers for certain subjects gradually in the early years and increasing this specialist teaching, we enable the children to enjoy the security of a form base and teacher, whilst benefiting from specialist expertise before they enter Senior School.
This, we find, also eases the transition into the Senior School, as they are already familiar with the system.
Swimming lessons are offered weekly to all Junior School pupils as we feel this is a necessary skill to learn from a young age.
Occassionally pupils are taken on an outing by the school. When pupils are taken to places other than to the sports field or leisure centre, which is part of a weekly timetable, a letter of consent will be requested from parents. A consent form to sign will be sent home with each pupil giving details of the intended visit. School uniform must be worn by all pupils attending an outing. This is for the safety of the pupils so they are easily identifiable. Recent visits have included both the Science Museum and Natural History Museum in London, the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton and holidays to Euro-Disney in Paris. Risk assessments are carried out by the appropriate staff prior to a visit taking place.
